a red evening at the pink door
January 22nd, 2007
Hello, kind people.
Just wanted to check in with a quick reminder about the intimate duo show Patrick and I are playing at the Pink Door restaurant in Pike Place Market this Friday, January 26.
We’re very pleased to be sharing this show with our new friends from Philadelphia, Red Heart the Ticker. This will be the last show on their West Coast tour, so please come out and help them end the tour with a night to remember! You certainly won’t be disappointed.
I first heard Red Heart the Ticker on KEXP while driving around back in the fall…the song was “Racing Stripe Winter,” which is still one of my favorites of theirs…I think I tuned in about halfway through the song, but what I heard was striking enough that I remembered to check KEXP’s trusty online playlist when I got home. I got the name of the band and got in touch with them through their website/MySpace page—I knew I liked their song, but I had no idea they’d be such nice folks!
Ty (bass/vocals) and I struck up a little e-correspondence, and I was told that Sonic Boom in Ballard had a few copies of their album, which worked out perfectly, as I had a gig at the Tractor later that week with my buddy Ian Moore. I’d just run over before the show and pick up the CD…
Turns out I couldn’t wait that long. I was wearing out the four tunes they had on MySpace, and I was dying to hear “Racing Stripe Winter” again, so I made a special trip and picked up a copy of For the Wicked (for the paltry sum of $8.99, no less!). It instantly landed on my already-full year-end favorites list, and it’s in heavy rotation to this day. Seriously, guys: if you’re a fan of beautiful, moody pop music with touches of spectral Americana (and let’s face it—if you’re not, what are you doing here?), do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this album.
Better yet, come see us all this Friday at the Pink Door. I’m sure Ty and Robin will have CDs on hand that they’d be happy to sell you. There’s no cover charge, and the Pink Door has delicious food and wine. There’s really no reason not to be there. Unless you hate us, that is.
Also don’t forget to tune into KEXP (90.3 FM here in Seattle, or worldwide at kexp.org) on Thursday (1/25) at 9:30am to hear the RHTT folks lay it down, early-morning style. They’ll be playing a very cool show later that night at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard with RJM buddies Jen Wood and Tim Seely, too. I’ll be there!
In other news, we’re still hard at work on the album…it’s pretty much down to vocals, strings, and some Mellotron/various keyboard touches here and there. Many special guests are in the works. You guys are going to love this record, I promise. Just sit tight a while longer, and keep an eye on the Studio Journal for updates.
In the meantime, you can check out a live mp3 from our recent barnburner at the Crocodile Café over in the Web Exclusives section. The song’s called “Blessed Are”, and it’ll be featured on the new record, albeit in a much more expansive form. This’ll provide a nice sneak peek, though, and it also highlights the rock machine our new four-piece lineup has become! Patrick couldn’t be happier.
Also stay tuned in the coming days for some incredible photos from the show (taken by our good friend Seth Wonner). Thanks, Seth!
Alright, guys. I think that’s it for me right now. See you all Friday at the Pink Door!
