the stranger, crocodile recap, other goodies

June 27th, 2006

Good day!

It’s been a wonderful week. Let’s start at the beginning:

Imagine my surprise and elation last Wednesday when I opened up the new edition of The Stranger and found a glowing preview of the following day’s show at the Crocodile Café in the Up & Coming section, courtesy of Mr. Kurt B. Reighley. For those of you who don’t live in Seattle, Kurt writes The Stranger’s roots-fixated Border Radio column, and he’s long been one of my favorite music writers in the city. All the more so now!

For those of you who didn’t get a chance to read the article before last week’s paper became this week’s hamster-cage liner, you can head over to the Press section of the site and do so right now. Or, if you like, you can read it in context at the Stranger’s site. Whatever your preferred method might be, take a look and celebrate with us!

On to Thursday: thanks to everyone who helped make the show at the Crocodile Café such a huge success! I can’t possibly list you all here, but you know who you are, and we thank you from the bottom of our ecstatic little hearts. Our show-mates the Cloves and North Twin played fantastic sets, and the Red Jacket Mine dour trio was in full effect, I must say.

For everyone that wasn’t in attendance, fear not: the show was well-documented, thanks to Jim (the Crocodile’s excellent soundman), who captured the show on CD and DVD, and our good friend Seth Wonner, who took some lovely photographs. For those keeping track, Seth is responsible for capturing our set at the Showbox, so we know his shots are going to be keepers. Stay tuned to the Past Shows page and the Photos section for updates of that sort. Also, keep an eye on the Music page for exclusive live tracks!

Phew…as you can see, the adrenaline is still pumping after Thursday night’s triumph. In other news, I’ve posted a couple new four-track demos in the Music section of the site. I’m in the midst of writing a new full-length album, slated to be recorded this fall at Seattle’s legendary Studio Litho with noted producer Shawn Simmons at the helm, so expect more where these came from as summer plays out.

We’re incredibly excited about making a real record in a real studio, even though it’s going to cost many thousands of dollars that we don’t currently have. But don’t worry—second jobs will be taken on, plasma will be sold, I will subsist on tacos alone, and come springtime 2007, you all will have a lovingly-labored-over Red Jacket Mine album in your hands, CD players, iPods, heads, and hearts. Just thinking of it makes me swoon.

Many more shows are on the horizon, the first of which will take place this Saturday, July 1 at Anacortes, Washington’s Brown Lantern. If you’re up that way, stop in and say hello! We’d really love to see you.

More soon!
